Hi Paul,
I was just going thru my Quiet Please mp3's I got from your site
(Thanx)and found the following ones (12) were corrupted somehow.
The ones that were in your archive I redownloaded several times
but they were always corrupt sounding
(dropouts and time speedups, ...) but most in your archive download
just fine so I don't think it's the downloading that's corrupting
them or the other 80% would corrupt themselves as well. I suspect
it's in the files themselves. Here's my list:

THE FOLLOWING HAVE VERY HIGH PITCHED CHATTER IN BACKGROUND:
25 In Memory of Bernadine in new archive as of 2-02-02
76 My Son, John also has dropouts & speedups
87 Valentine in new archive as of 2-23-02
88 Where Do You Get Your Ideas? in new archive as of 2-23-02
93 A Time to be Born and a Time... in new archive as of 2-23-02
100 The Little Morning also has dropouts

THE FOLLOWING HAVE DROPOUTS, BARKS AND INCONSISTENT TIME SPEEDUPS:
46 Clarissa
61 Anonymous and VERY low volume
71 Good Ghost
85 Northern Lights

THE FOLLOWING HAS VERY HEAVY RHYTHMIC DISTORTION:
33 Baker's Dozen in new archive as of 2-23-02
could be severe
distortion/muffling together of
LP scratches but is HEAVY!!!

THE FOLLOWING LOADS, IT'S TIME LENGTH COMES UP & THEN BLANKS &
THEN JUST SITS THERE (Doesn't Play):
81 The Time of the Big Snow

I hope this will help you, it's not a complaint, for all I know
it may be just MY problem and no one elses but I'll never know if I
don't mention it!

Regards

With Quiet, Please, a lot of the episodes simply don't exist in good sound. It has to do with how they were discovered. The original 12 are in good sound, then about a decade ago a group of several dozen was found that were mostly severely damaged. Then, there was another discovery that had some better quality sound... but some of the episodes are still only available from the worse set. (And 18 episodes aren't even known to exist.)

61 Anonymous and VERY low volume

Yes, that one I know has the severe volume problem. I've considered turning it into a WAV, increasing the volume, and then recompressing into MP3. Problem is, that'd make the quality even worse.

25 In Memory of Bernadine in new archive as of 2-02-02
76 My Son, John also has dropouts & speedups
88 Where Do You Get Your Ideas? in new archive as of 2-23-02
93 A Time to be Born and a Time... in new archive as of 2-23-02
100 The Little Morning also has dropouts

Some of the problem with these ones could be caused by my amateur transfer of them from tapes... those are all among the episodes I encoded myself since I couldn't find them online.

87 Valentine in new archive as of 2-23-02
46 Clarissa
71 Good Ghost
85 Northern Lights

Checking what's on my hard drive, they seem very easily listenable... I don't notice any words missing or anything too hard to hear. Slight disruption in parts, but not bad.

THE FOLLOWING HAS VERY HEAVY RHYTHMIC DISTORTION:
33 Baker's Dozen in new archive as of 2-23-02

Yep, the one on my hard drive does as well. Since the RealAudio version at cyber49er.com sounds the same as well, I don't know if a better version exists. If you can find any episodes where the streaming RealAudio version at http://www.cyber49er.com sounds better than the version I have, then those would be ones that I should hope to find better versions of.

THE FOLLOWING LOADS, IT'S TIME LENGTH COMES UP & THEN BLANKS &
THEN JUST SITS THERE (Doesn't Play):
81 The Time of the Big Snow

The version on my hard drive is fine, so when I upload that one to the new archive it should (hopefully) work right. I'll do that within the next few days if I remember.

I wish I could download everything to check if the files sound the same as what I have, but on my modem it takes around an hour per file.
